Parental Influence

A few weeks ago, I saw this article posted by a parent and thought it was interesting. The article is titled, "7 Ways Parents Push Their Kids Away from God Without Realizing It." I think the best line of the article is this, "If you boil Christian living down to church attendance and morality, your children will notice." I can see that applying to all aspects of life... If your life is only about work, your children will notice. If sports are all about winning, your children will notice. If keeping up with your neighbors is incredibly important, your children will notice. Here's the article:
If you don't have time to read through the whole article, here are the author's 7 points for things youth need from their parents so they won’t abandon God:
- They need you to stop handing their faith off to youth leaders
- They need you to care as much about their struggles as you do about their salvation
- They need you to answer the questions they are asking
- They need you to stop protecting them
- They need to see God as more than rules and church attendance
- They need to see your struggles and doubts
- They need you to plead for God to build and sustain their faith
Discussion questions with MS students: What are the most important aspects of Christianity? What is most important about life? Do you think that I demonstrate that? What's most important about your life? Do you think you demonstrate that?
