“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Mathew 7:24-27
This past summer our high school youth group traveled to Denver, Colorado on a mission trip. That week was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. Along with serving the local community we did daily worship and lessons that were all centered around a theme, Rooted. Throughout the week we dove into what it means to truly be rooted in Christ and how we can grow through him. Our focus passage for the week was Mathew 7:24-27.
The concept of living a life rooted in Jesus is perfectly described in this parable. The wise man builds his house on the rock and when the storm hits, the house does not budge because it is built on a firm foundation. On the other hand, the foolish man builds his house on the sand. When the wind blows, and the rain falls, the house is destroyed. As Christians we are called to be like the wise man, building our lives on the rock. God’s unwavering kindness, steadfast love, and unshakable grace is what will allow us to push and grow through the storms in our life.
The holiday season is full of festive activities and crazy plans. While all these things are good and fun it is important to remember that living a life rooted in Christ means finding ways to glorify and praise the Lord in everything. As easy as it is to get swept up in the holiday festivities it is extremely crucial that we don’t forget why and who we celebrate this time of year. For the remainder of this advent season, I encourage you to focus on what your celebration is rooted in and direct your focus to the Lord!
Activity
This week I encourage you to listen to the song Firm Foundation by Mavrick City Music. This has been one of my favorite worship songs over the past year and it does an amazing job of capturing the concept of rooting your life in Jesus.
Prayer
Lord,
Thank you for sending your one and only son down to earth to save me from my sins. God, help me to remember that you are my firm foundation that will never let me fall. With you I am safe and protected. During this busy time of year remind me to keep my focus on you.
Amen
